Madame Ecosse: Winnie Ewing
madmac productions has been commissioned by BBC ALBA to produce a documentary on Winnie Ewing, one of the most influential Scotswoman of her generation. “Stop the world, Scotland wants to get on.” were the first words that Winnie Ewing spoke to the crowd in November 1967 when she won a historic by-election victory for the Scottish National Party and with it propelled the Scottish National Party from the fringes to the centre of Scottish politics.
Travelling Scotland and the world she has met and worked with most of the major political figures of the last thirty years. Her celebrated nickname “Madame Ecosse” testifies not only to her fame but also to the affection and respect in which she is held.
On 10th July 2009 this Grande Dame of Scottish politics celebrates her 80th birthday. This intimate but hard-hitting film explores her life and work and tells the story of a fast moving era during which her country and her life changed completely.
